Sarah Stierch

  

Sarah Stierch earned her MA in Museum Studies from George Washington University (‘12) and a BA in Native American Studies from Indiana University (‘09).

Stierch is currently the US OpenGLAM Coordinator for the Open Knowledge Foundation, Wikipedian in Residence at the World Digital Library, and is still providing private consulting services.

Stierch’s passion lies in community organizing, research, open culture & knowledge outreach. She has layered these interests by exploring how cultural institutions can work with open sharing technology, such as Wikipedia, to broaden public awareness and interest in their collections holdings. She also has respect for and experience in traditional museum methods, including collections management and business administration.

Stierch has garnered experience at the National Museum of the American Indian, Colonial Williamsburg, Smithsonian Institution Archives, Archives of American Art, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, American Association of Museums, Wikimedia Foundation, and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art.

For the past year, Stierch served as a Community Fellow at the Wikimedia Foundation, where she served as a community organizer. She developed extensive help systems and programming to engage more women to edit Wikipedia.

Her work has been featured in The Independent (UK), Gawker, Smithsonian, Slate, the CBC, and the Huffington Post. She has presented her work on the subjects of open culture and gender theory & outreach at conferences such as the Open Knowledge Festival, American Association of Museums, Museum Computer Network, Wikimania, and others.

She lives in Oakland, California with a cat named Mersey and a very large vinyl record collection.
